Spanish Cuisine Reviews

These are giant pig legs and can be found al over Spain

I was just in Spain, famed for their jamon Iberico and tapas. My mom was telling me about a college friend that went to Spain and to save money lived off the tapas that was served with beer. He is now a successful Microsoft employee. My mom told us that story when she was teaching us about tapas now it is my turn.

First with a rating of six chickens, jamon Iberico sandwich. I had it at Puerta del Sol, Madrid. It was pretty simple, just jamon and baguette, but the jamon was very good. It had the perfect amount of fat and and the perfect amount of meat. The baguette must have been teleported from Paris the second before they gave me the sandwich.

Next Jamon Iberico 50% belota which is the very fancy jamon so we only got one package. At first I was slightly unexcited about it because we were in a train and the ham was quite smelly. It didn’t look like the other jamones. It was a lot thicker and the color was a lot lighter. It was amazing because it was so smooth. When I bit into it my teeth just slid right through it, and I love that texture. The taste was amazing as well. It reminded me of the plain giant circle steaks of ham that my mom made except a lot greasier. It was kind of salty but not too salty. It earns a rating of six chickens.

My mom and I were very excited to try the calamari sandwich, a classic of Madrid, that is until we had our first bites. It is very simple: calamari, (which for those of you who do not  know what that is it is fried cuttlefish or squid.) and a baguette. I love calamari and love baguette but was expecting some vegetables or at least lemon juice, the ingredient without which you can not have calamari. It just wasn’t good. It was too dry, so I finished all the milk that my siblings had not poured 10 bags of sugar in (which was one glass, mine). My mom said she had it at a fancy restaurant but it still wasn’t good.  I would give it a rating of 3 chickens.

Next a classic of Cuba. I know that shouldn’t be in this review because it is a Spanish review but we will never go to Cuba on our trip, and this place was delicious. Plus, the restaurant was in Spain. The dish was ropa vieja or in English “old clothes” because it is very stringy. It is a Cuban meat stew. The texture is amazing and so is the taste. But most importantly to me it does not lack meat.

This next food is more of an American thing but it was special the way it was done. It was a donut shop called Boldu. It is special because the donuts that they make are shaped like little people. Since we were in Barcelona for Hallowe’en they had special edition donuts and the coolest was a person with a hatchet in his chest surrounded by red frosting. But they also had pumpkins and ghosts. It was the best donut I have had on this whole trip.

That is the pumpkin doughnut it is chocolate filled

Overall I like the Spanish cuisine especially all the jamon Iberico. There were a lot of other great places that I didn’t mention because they were not Spanish or I wasn’t the one in my family that went. One of those was a restaurant in Barcelona called La Pubilla. My whole family attempted to go twice and both times they did not have enough space but my mom and my dad were able to go there on a date. My mom said it was one of her top 5 restaurants in all her life, and she has been to a lot of nice restaurants.  I am so glad everybody likes the reviews and is giving me such nice comments. Next up, Moroccan food reviews.
