As you know from reading the blog we were recently aboard the Queen Mary 2 which has a crossing duration of one week which of course means that we must be fed. And of course that food was delicious so I am here to review it. But of course with three meals for 7 days that is 21 meals which is a lot to remember so here are my big hits and my lows.
First the Steak Platter. I would give it a perfect six chickens. It was actually not something off the menu but at the Kings Court buffet they had new foods every day to make your more casual meals such as breakfast, lunch, and my favorite Midnight Snack. This platter consisted of steak, edamame, seaweed salad, and to perfectly balance off the meal breadsticks as the carbs. The steak cooked to a perfect medium rare was amazing accompanied by the perfectly seasoned edamame and seaweed salad with nice crunchy salty bread sticks.
Next my favorite which I had 4 nights in a row with six chickens Tomato Soup. I know it is a really casual thing and seems like it is all the same, but this had a weird thing to it that made it delicious. Maybe it was the fancy drizzle of cream or the or the quality/ripeness of the tomatoes, maybe it was freshly made on the spot, or maybe my experience with tomato soup has been just bad, but whatever it was, it was delicious. And it is the best tomato soup I have ever had.
So most of my reviewing has been happy and mostly positive reviews but here is one of the things aboard the Queen Mary 2 that I did not appreciate as much as other things. I would give it 2 1/2 chickens, afternoon tea. Don’t get me wrong I love afternoon tea but this one wasn’t that good. First, the selection of tea. There were plenty of flavors but they did not tell you that nor was there an obvious menu of all the possible teas so I ended up with the default and I still don’t know what the flavor was. Next, the scones were too sweet, didn’t have much of a texture, and if there were berries I didn’t taste them. Last, the sweets were very good but too rich and you could only eat one without drinking all the cream that you are supposed to put in your tea.
One of my favorites, more of an event, was the chocolate fountain. On one of the last days at Kings Court Buffet, there was a chocolate fountain, literally a fountain of chocolate, along with ice sculptures and of course delicious pastries to stick in the fountain of delicious liquid chocolate. I had cake pops, which I dipped into the chocolate fountain and coated with sprinkles for a nice second texture. It was the best sweet ever but of course required milk.
Another one that I did not like, to wrap us up, was the sushi. I love sushi and growing up in palo alto and going to sushi restaurants once a month is a good experience with it, but aboard the Queen Mary 2 it was just not good. I take a liking to nigiri which is a slab of fish on a chunk of rice but the rice was really bad. It had this weird texture to it that made it taste weird and just not good.
So that sums us up and there are plenty more dishes that I did not mention bad and good just like every article I’ve written. I’ll be back for food of the UK.
Amazing. These reviews are so good they should go viral. How about sharing the reviews with the Public Relations Department.
“but of course required milk” I so agree. Sometimes at work when someone brings in sweets, I say, “Where’s the milk?” I wish I could have joined you for tea. Reminds of tea in Ely.
Especially if the sweets involve chocolate. Chocolate needs milk!
All that food makes me hungry
Love this Rainier! Sorry about the sushi. You got spoiled growing up in Palo Alto! But the chocolate fountain sounds fun, and the steak dinner sounds yummy. I love these reviews! Keep them coming. You write about food so well – the taste, the texture, the presentation, etc. So impressive! Love you!
Also, telly NellyB I love that he was representing Dude Perfect on the boat and tell Ro-Ro I love her necklace!
